Diamond Cuts Through the Eras

Diamond Cuts: A journey through time and sparkle

When shopping for a Vintage Engagement Ring, one of the most important choices is the center stone. Diamond cuts have evolved dramatically over the centuries, so let’s take a closer look at three distinct diamond cuts: the Old Mine cut, the Old European cut, and the modern Round Brilliant cut. These cuts tell a fascinating story of craftsmanship, technology, and evolving aesthetics.

Old Mine Cut

Imagine the flickering light of candlelight illuminating a diamond – that's the era the Old Mine cut hails from. Popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras (18th and 19th centuries), this antique cut was designed to shine under these softer lighting conditions.

Key Characteristics:

Shape: Typically a squarish or cushion shape with rounded corners. However, each Old Mine cut was hand-cut and can vary in its exact shape and symmetry.

Facets: Features 58 larger, irregular facets.

Crown: High crown (the upper part of the diamond).

Table: Small table (the flat top surface of the diamond).

Culet: Large, visible culet (the flat point at the bottom of the diamond).

Light Performance: Old Mine cuts are known for their soft, romantic glow rather than the intense sparkle of modern cuts. They have larger facets that create broader flashes of light, emphasizing the diamond's fire (the rainbow of colors) over its brilliance (white light reflection).

Old European Cut

As diamond cutting techniques advanced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Old European cut emerged. It bridged the gap between the older hand-cut styles and the burgeoning era of modern precision.

Key Characteristics:

Shape: Perfectly round.

Facets: Also features 58 facets, but they are arranged for improved symmetry compared to Old Mine cuts.

Crown: High crown.

Table: Smaller table than modern cuts.

Culet: Often has a large, visible culet, similar to the Old Mine cut.

Light Performance: Old European cuts display stronger fire than Old Mine cuts, but generally exhibit less brilliance than modern Round Brilliant cuts due to differences in facet arrangement. They have a unique "chunky" sparkle and are prized for their vintage appeal.

Round Brilliant Cut

The modern Round Brilliant cut, pioneered in the early 20th century, revolutionized the diamond industry by maximizing brilliance through precise mathematical calculations. It has become the most popular diamond cut globally, prized for its exceptional sparkle and brilliance.

Key Characteristics:

Shape: Circular shape.

Facets: Typically 58 facets, strategically placed to maximize light return.

Crown and Pavilion: Precise crown and pavilion angles.

Table: Larger table.

Culet: Pointed or very tiny culet, unlike the open culets of antique cuts.

Light Performance: Round Brilliant cuts are designed for optimal brilliance, reflecting light back to the viewer in a dazzling display of sparkle and fire. They are the standard for modern diamond cutting and are renowned for their intense light performance.
